Final Audience Research

These were the questions we asked;

1. Did you enjoy our two minute opening sequence?
2. How would you rate the sound we used in the opening? (out of 5)
3. Was our opening true to the horror genre?
4. Have you seen any films which are similar to ours, and if so, what?
5. Was our film opening; Awful, Bad, Average, Good, Amazing?

Person A
1. Yes i did
2. 4
3. Definitely
4. No
5. Good

Person B
1. Yes
2. 4
3. Yes
4. Yes Candyman
5. Amazing

Person C
1. Yes
2. 3
3. Yes
4. No
5. Good

Person D
1. Yes
2. 4
3. Yes
4. Yes, couldnt remember which film.
5. Good

Person E
1. Yes
2. 3
3. Maybe
4. No
5. Average

These results show that most people did infact enjoy our opening sequence and most found it true to the horror genre. This was important as for our target audience we would have to make sure the film appeals to the horror fans that we are targeting. We asked a question about the sound because we spent a long time trying to find a suitable sound to use for our backing track. Most of the results were positive but there was a 3, meaning in the middle.

Proposal for Evaluation

We are going to do a directors cut, interviews with both the actor and the director and a DVD menu. We may also do a comparison video between the preliminary task and Bloody Mary opening. We will both have an interview done for ourselves and we will both put some of our blogs in the dvd extract, we are spliting it half and half.

Evaluation (Draft)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Normally in an opening horror sequence the audience witnesses a woman die with her screaming and then the titles begin to roll. Our opening sequence differs however with a teenage boy being the victim instead of viewing a negative stereotype of where the girl is powerless and always in need of rescuing. The boy ends up dying therefore challenging the negative stereotype as we watch the boy becoming powerless and in need of rescue. This challenges other films such as Scary Movie where a girl dies. The teenager also looks blank and like he has nothing in life.
We use a typical horror soundtrack for our opening as it is dark and creepy. We use blood as iconography for the horror genre. This worked for us as it created a serious feel about the horror; we showed through the iconography that the teenager was in trouble and that he had been possessed.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our two minute opening follows a teenage boy to his death. This opening represents teenagers in a horror situation with the boy being powerless. We follow him walking though to the cliff where he ends up jumping and killing himself.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There might be a few media institutions who may distribute our film such as Optimum Releasing or Verve Pictures. Optimum Releasing distributes over 200 independent films a year therefore providing a reason as to why they may distribute ours. We would probably focus on a smaller target audience as it gives it more chance of success. There is an audience for this type of film with the success of Scream and Candyman. The latter grossed over $25 million and is similar to our film.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our two minute opening would probably vary from teenagers to adults as it is a teen horror movie. The ages would probably start from around 15 and rise to about 30. Obviously as this is a teen horror we are aiming the audience to be teenagers but awe would expect adults to be interested in certain aspects of our film such as the horror. Audience feedback is extremely important to our opening as we can find out the views of our peers and see what we could have improved on. We will also find out what mistakes we made if any and see what is good about our opening.

Sound at the End

We downloaded a guitar melody to compliment the final shot of me walking up the drive. It is simple but we both feel it works as it contrasts the tension built up beforehand. We took it again from the web site 'free sound.org'. This web site has proven to be very useful to us as we have got all of our sounds barring the diagetic ones, from there.

Image Control

We needed to make all the walking shots more gloomy, so we changed the image control and pushed the blue bar up slightly so we took out all the warmth. It was too red with the leaves so the blue toned that down a bit. We also moved a few things around such as the close up of my face bleeding in the mirror so it made the film easier to understand what was going on.

Film Opening Changes

We decided to change our film opening compared to our storyboard as we felt it would fit better with the story. What i mean by this is that the ending on our storyboard didn't have '3 Days Earlier'. We felt we needed to change it also so because we needed to include an extra few seconds so we could get to the time limit of 10% either side of two minutes. We added on the '3 days earlier' shot so our film didn't look like a trailer and it looked like a film opening.

Credits

We open our crdits with 'Critical Pictures presents' which then cuts back to me walking. A few seconds later we cut to black to see 'A Waters/Smith production'. Yet again we cut back to the action with myself walking to the stairs. It then cuts to 'A Nathan Waters Film'. We then have 'Directed by Nathan Waters' when the tap shot is being shown. Then it cuts to 'Produced by Owen Smith'

Hue and Saturation

To make each flashback obvious to the audience, we subtly changed the hue and saturation. We put the hue up on every shot tht involed myself walking to the woods. We put it up to about 10. For the saturation, we put the saturation up to 130 on every bathroom scene. For the bathroom shots we also put the Hue down to minus 15. This created a contrast from the woods to the flashbacks as both were different saturations. This also creates a darker feel over the flashbacks as this is where Mary is in the mirror.

Editing - The Mirror Scene

For the mirror scene, we had to overlay two images in the mirror. To do this we used the Four-Point Garbage Matte which allowed us to cut part of one shot, the mirror, with the shot of me looking at my hands. This is what we set out to do as now it shows me panicking while in the mirror, Mary is in my body staring at me. Blood is pouring from my eyes in the mirror but not in real life. We then added a fast blur over the top so it covered up any gap in the mirror and made it look like Mary fades in. We had positioned the camera in my bath so we had a set position. This meant that the camera wouldn't be moving meaning the angle of both images would be the same. This was important because if they were at different angles it wouldn't look the same.

Sound - 23rd March 2010

We have found a few sounds to use as the backtrack in our film. The main backing track is simply called tension and we got this from the website free sounds.org . Another sound we are thinking of using is called toms effect. It is a few drums beating a very slightly different times to create a tension builder.

Rough Cut (very rough)

No sound. It finishes at about minute. This is also old now as we have a far improved cut which will be posted soon.

Final Shoot - 24th March 2010

In our final shoot we hope to achieve the mirror shots that see the boy start bleeding and then controlled by Mary. To do this we will have to get the correct angle of shot so that the audience can see the boy but also Mary in the mirror. The camera will be positioned to the left of the mirror so we can clearly see the boy but because of the angle we wont be able to see the camera's reflection. What we intend to do then is to have he boy look into the mirror and then start to feel pain, because of Mary. Then we hope to overlay the mirror with another image. What i mean by this is that we will have two images, the original one where I'm looking into the mirror and starting to feel pain and then the one where Mary is controlling me and in the mirror. The camera will show me bending down in pain but the mirror will show me standing in the mirror looking at me in pain.

It shouldn't be to hard to edit this clip as although we have to add another image over the mirror in the scene, it should just be the simple process of putting it in the video 2 line in Adobe Premiere. It should then be overlayed into are original shot.

The final shoot went extremely well as we achieved all the shots we intended to get and also played about with a few things as well. We put blood all over my hand and then put a hand mark on the mirror just so we had something extra to convey evil.

Editing
After we captured everything in and watched it back, we felt it needed to change certain parts in it to make it better. Instead of just having the mirror scene and then the woods scene, we decided to have flashbacks of the mirror scene inbetween the walking shots. The titles would also be inbetween each walking shot for the first thirty seconds or so.

Friday, 19 March 2010

Time Lapse

While editing, we needed a way to speed the walking up. We had two choices, either cut out a lot of shots or use the time lapse tool. We ended up using time lapse. This tool allows us to speed up any shot we have got. It creates a quite edgy effect as it makes me look like im walking extremely fast. It also makes the sound speed up which again makes it feel dark and scary.

Third Shoot - Re-shoot - 17th March 2010

As a lot of the shots that myself and Nathan had got weren't good enough, we have booked the camera kit one final time to try and achieve some better shots. We are going to do this by re-writing part of the plot in the opening two minutes. Instead of Amanda dying, we will have a boy committing suicide. We will still have the bathroom scene, where it will appear Mary is controlling the teenage boy out of the house and off a cliff. We will create fake blood, which will be pouring from the eyes of the teen. We will have close ups of the boys face to show the lack of expression on his face and we will follow him until he jumps.

Rather than going to the supernatural direction, we are going to be true to the horror genre and be menacing and horrific. Blood will be pouring out the teens eyes and he will be controlled until he kills himself.

This shoot went much better than the previous one as the natural light really helped us when filming. We shot all of the woods scene and the cliff scene, which looked quite good. the only problem we had was that when showing the rest of the class it looked repetitive. This was re in forced by the class so we are thinking of cutting a lot of the wood parts out to make it more exciting for the audience. The other thing we need to do is shoot the scene in the bathroom with me there. This will also include Bloody Mary hopefully.

Editing
For the opening titles, we are having the tap shot fading in and out and in between each fade there will be a black screen. After this has happened, Bloody Mary will fade in. For the tap shots, we have desaturated the colour. Originally we had a lot of time lapse in our film but it got repetitive and overused so we have put a cross dissolve instead in some parts. This still shows passing time but it makes me disappear for a second and then re-appear a bit further in the shot.

Sound - 15th March 2010

For our film opening, we would need some realistic sound effects to create a dark, gloomy feel about are film. We needed sounds to create tension for the audience as it is after all a horror film. At first we used some diagetic sounds such as the scream or the tap running as we would not have found more realistic sounds. We used the site http://www.freesound.org/index.php to get our sounds for tension and of Mary breathing.

Breathing/ Whispers

Backing Track

Both these are rough so we may or may not use them in our final cut.

Second Shoot - 14th March 2010

We shot most of the main shots today including the bedroom shot where Amanda eventually dies. This shot took a long time to get right as we felt lighting was a key issue to address. At first we thought we could just use bare daylight but as the shot progressed we felt it would not have been appropriate as it would have been too sunny to see the candle blown out and the light flicker on and off. We then closed the curtains which created a very dark atmosphere- too dark for the camera to pick up anything so finally we put on a lamp in the corner which has the ability to flicker without having to turn the light on and off. We then lit the candle and put that next to the mirror and the room was then ready to be shot in.

We shot Amanda sitting in her chair and then turning around to the lights flickering and then the candle goes out. I think this went really well as it looks good on camera but also has an edgy feel about it which, when put together with music, should sound brilliant and scary. Futhermore, we shot the scream fom Amanda wiht the door swinging shut and the light turning off. To do this, we had to have someone stand behind the door and someone kneeling next to the light, so when the door shut and the light turned off, it gave the impression that Bloody Mary had something to do with it. For that shot, the camera was positioned outside the door, giving us that extra bit of secrecy about the locations of the people doing things with the door and the light but also to leave the audience wondering how Amanda is dying. I like this style of horror as it leaves the death to the imgination of the viewer which in my opinion, is far more scary tan a film such as Saw where you see all the violence and gore.

However we are thinking that we may have to re-shoot a lot of this as it hasnt come out as well as we had expected. We have to many shots from a high angle, meaning we are constantly looking down on Amanda which doesnt work that well. Futhermore, we need to shoot the scene with Mary in the mirror as we have not yet done that.

First Shots - 6th March 2010

We decided to start filming on the saturday as both of us were free. Nathan came to my house and we used the outside of my house and the bathroom. We shot the first 12 seconds, basically the tap scene which opens are film. This went very well as we had diagetic sound which we think works beautifully. This saved us from using the dictaphone and recording sound. We took three different angles of the tap and took two shots of each angle just in case one didnt come up well enough.

The second location was just outside my house. We have two takes again for each shot and the shot starts with me walking out of the door of my house and then walking up my drive. Again we tried different angles but we made a mistake at the top of the drive where we broke the 180 rule. This means we will have to re-shoot that sequence to undo this error.

Editing

For the editing, we cut each shot slightly to cut the bits we didnt need. For example, for the opening, we cut each view of the tap to about 3 or 4 seconds and added the credits. We also added fades between each ut, changinging the opacity.

Audience Research - Group

We used the website Survey Monkey to create a survey about are genre choice and film treatment. Survey Monkey was useful as it let us create a survey for free with are ten questions on. Here are the responses we got:

For question 1, we simply asked 'what is your favorite genre?'. We asked this just so we could get an idea of our audience and the films they like to watch.

In question two, we asked the audience what there favorite movie opening was. Two people responded Saw with otheres suggesting a more comedic route with Monsters inc and Knocked Up responses. This question wsa helpful as it allowed us to see the opinions of the audience of their favorite film opening, which it was we are creating for our coursework.

This was question 8 of our survey. We asked if the audience enjoyed ghost films and the 58% of them said yes whereas the otheres said no. This was helpful as it tells us if doing a ghost film would be a popular choice and it looks like it will be.

This was are final question in our survey and it asks the audience if our treatment would appeal to them. Most of them said that the treatment sounds interesting which is a good sign. In contrats there were two people who thought it wouldnt appeal to them but luckily ten others disagreed.

Treatment rough version - Group

Group of people are daring each other to do things and one gets dared to say bloody mary 3 times into a mirror she does this and nothing happens, then one of the other girls who didn't say it later while at home gets killed by having her eyes clawed out in the mirror. this then leads to several more  before the girl who originally says it sees bloody mary however her boyfriend breaks the mirror before bloody mary is able to kill her. they think its all over however 6 months later we see her following the girl, this is where the film ends.

film name - Mary

Preliminary Task

Feedback #2

Owen/Nathan

I am confused - I am looking for your technical analysis and detailed product analysis, and from what I can see, you have done this to the same film? You should at this stage have 4 different (and closely related to your concept) film openings that are analysed on the blog (2 each).

You need to address this quickly - before you do your pitch.

Also - the analysis that are there are not detailed enough. You must make an effort to ensure that your planning is detailed as it will improve your final outcome as you will be informed and "inspired". I like your concept, but it needs to be developed further.

Treatment - Group

A 16 year old girl is being followed by a serial killing ghost, or that's what she thinks anyway. Nobody believes her until her best friends are brutally murdered with the words 'Death is Coming' smeared onto the walls. She starts to become paranoid over every little thing which happens in her life with her boyfriend still refusing to believe in ghosts as he is 'too old' to believe in them. He starts to worry for his girlfriend and opts to take her too his house where she will be safe. When she arrives she witnesses her boyfriend committing suicide but as she tries to release him from the rope she realises there is something not quite right about him.

This was are original idea and has recently been improved.

NW / Genre Analysis

1. The genre we have chosen to do is horror. There are many sub genres that exist within horror we will be closest to a teen horror. Other teen horrors that exist are Scary movie 1, 2 and 3 are very good examples of teen horrors.

2. All of the scary movie films all follow the very obvious very stereotpycal horror filming techniques, they may use this in a comical way but this is very good to look at as all of the techniques are very overt so making it very easy to identify. In scary movie 1 there is a scene that shows very clearly some very iconic themes for horror films, it has a woman trying to escape from a killer but she trips and breaks her leg then tries to crawl away this is very iconic and is shown in many horror films.

3. The usual narrative of a teen horror would be a group of teenagers all together and would slowly be picked off by a killer one at a time till there was only one or two left and these remaining people would either escape and there be no trace of their friends or they would confront the killer or killers and most of the time it ends in a fire which destroys all evidence of the whole event. The opening quite often will start off very upbeat and cheerful like in the film House of Wax where a group of teenagers all decide to go on a road trip and are all very upbeat. However, there is usually one in the group that doesn't want to go but is persuaded by someone that they are sexually attracted to, they are also usually one of the people that survives until the end.

4. The killer in scream is a prime example of a stereotypical killer.

An example of a hero is one of the brothers from supernatural this is a tv series but is based upon a supernatural horror and is still an example of a hero.

5. The typical location for most teen horrors are in the suburbs of America and occasionally they will be in a small abandoned town in the middle of nowhere that is not on any map, this add a scence of forboading as it is very rare that a town will be completely abandoned for no reason.

6. The iconography I would expect to see in this genre would be a killer in a mask using a weapon that could cause a lot of pain before it killed you. For example in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre there is the crazed killer wielding a massive chainsaw.

7. The costume used in Texas Chainsaw Massacre are very effective as they are simple clothes that don't cost a huge ammount to make unlike in some movies where the costumes are all very fancy and expensive. The costume used for the killer are just the stereotypical south American farmers wear but they have been torn and covered in blood to create a much more effective and scary costume.

NW / Film Noir

Themes
The themes of film noir are usually based around moral ambiguity and sexual motivation. This way of making a film is often regarded as very pessimistic and is usually based in a world that is inherently corrupt. This is shown in the usual use of corrupt members of the police or other people who are usually regarded with high authority. The films often had a sense of heightened anxiety as this is said to have followed WWII

Visual Techniques
The visual techniques used in film noir are very iconic as the use of low-key lighting and shadows is known to anyone even if they do not realize that it is to do with film noir. The characters faces are often obscured or covered with shadow this is very popular with modern day hollywood as it adds a fear of the unknown and can seem people seem very sinister. There is also very often the use of disorientating camera shots, like dutch angles and low angle shots, along with people often being only seen in reflections in mirrors or other surfaces.

Narrative
The narrative tends to be centered around the protagonist with him often telling the story line using flashbacks or flash forwards, it is also usually a very convoluted story line. The story is usually based on crime, heists or cons, accusations and double crosses.

Characters
Film noir often has misunderstood and morally flawed characters and there are also the stock characters such as the detective and femme fatal. The femme fatal is often noted for her treachery and almost always dies before the end of the film as there is usually a sense of karma by the end of the films as people usually get their "just deserts". There are many iconic props associated with the femme fatals like the trails of smoke and there is also usually a shot of her legs moving up to her body and she is often objectified however she uses this to her advantage as the film goes on.

Genre

This horror film supports your expectations and views of a stereotypical horror film as it has the iconography of suspense and fear of the unknown as you don't see the killer. The opening conforms to the charateristics of a supernatual horror opening.

Film Language
The mise-en-scene of this opening conveys the meaning as you are introduced to the silver knife the remote location and you don't see the whole werewolf however you see the arms and you are suppose to make the link between the silver and furry arms, this makes you think of a werewolf. The use of camera shows how sucluded they are and helps to emphasise the horror and emotion of the opening. Sound is used to increase the suspense and thrill of the scene.

Narrative
The narrative is shown in a linear fashion during this opening scene, as the opening does not involve any of the main characters we are not postioned with either side of the narrative. We can identify the werewolf is evil and trying to eat humans this is done through the use of mise-en-scene and the characters. The major theme of the narrative is the werewolves eating people around an area of scotland. Tension is created and maintained through the use of sound as the music over the top is creating a sense of forboading and when the werewolf attacks we cannot see it.

Representation and Ideology
We see a working class couple this is shown through the use of costume and the dialogue as they talk about work and are wearing lower quality clothing. The prominant belief shown in this scene is the supernatural.

Media Audiences
The target audience for this film are 15-35 year olds as this film is rated 15 this means that the people watching it are usually old enough to make there way to and from the cinema or place they are buying to DVD from.

Institutional Context
There are no big stars used in this film this has been done to decrease to costs of the film. The film was produced by Pathe and is an inudstrial film

Genre Analysis - OS

1. My chosen genre is horror. Horror films strive to elict the emotions of fear, horror and terror from the viewers. There are many sub-genres to a horror film including teen horror, sci fi horror and supernatural horror. An example of a teen horror would be Scream. Scream also created a new sub-genre called slasher, due to the fact the film had a lot of violence with knives.

2. Teen Horror- Scream- In this film they used a phone to have the killer talk to a victim and at first she thinks he is asking her out on a date until he asks for her name as he wants to know who he is looking at. The use of the phone in this way is ideal as we cant see the killer, only the girl. This creates suspense and mystery for the viewers. Use of shadows in films also create a fear factor for viewers, for example in Pscho, there is a woman in the shower and you can see a shadow through the curtain until he/she comes close enough to see that it is the murderer and he kills her with a knife.

3. The typical narrative for a horror film is that there will be a hero/heroes and villains and that the villains will end up killing most of the heroes but in the end everything will work out fine and the baddies will be defeated. This is not the case more recently as films and T.V shows have tried the villains winning such as in the show Dead Set, where all the protagonists eventually fall and turn into zombies.

4. In the horror films, there are normally archetypal heroes or villains. The villains are normally trying to kill al the main protagonists whereas the heroes try and survive and eventually stop the villains. For example in Saw (2004) there is 'the jigsaw' who trys to murder everyone by using various traps which poften end up being gory killing machines.

5. A typical location for a horror film would be a haunted house or an isolated island, somewhere no one can reach apart from the protagonists. This helps to build up suspense as we fear for the protagonists life as they have no help, they are on ther own. An example would be 'The exorcism of Emily Rose' where the opening sequence starts off with an establishing shot of a house, with nothing else near it or in sight.

6.In the horror genre, you would expect to see iconography such as a full moon to represent a werewolf or other creatures or an axe to represent murded or death.

7. An example of a suitable costume would be the costume from the 'Scream' series where someone dreeses up to look like the grim reaper, wearing a whit mask to hide his/her face.

8. Lighting is very important in horror films as it means it is harder to see things for the protagonist, which in turn makes us scared. Normally horror films will be in the dark but a lot of the time they shoot in the day and edit it afterwards. Colour also plays a key part in horror films as in 'Seven' they use red to connote blood, gore and death. This is in their opening sequence so it helps to set a scene on what the film will actually be like.

Opening Sequence of Panic Room, Second Analysis - OS

At the start the camera pans giving us an establishing shot of New york. They do this to set the scene for the film and give us an idea of the location. It then cuts to another area of New York, this time showing the bottom half of a building. The whole opening sequence follows this trend as it is a montage of New York. The music playing is building up and this shows us that something may happen or that the film is full of suspense and mystery. The instruments playing are that of an orchestra, violins seem to be heard the most. The camera cuts to different parts of New York each time but it is not a still image as you can see the cars moving on the streets, therefore showing the possibility of us looking on from a cameras point of view. This would be relevant as the film is based about being in a panic room with hidden cameras in the house so anyone hiding can see what is happening.

Analysing the Sequence

The film opening starts with just a book with the pages being flicked but you then see a hand turn one of the pages. It then cuts twice, first to a black screen with the production name on and then cuts to a, what looks like a drawn picture of two hands with a red line in between them. The colour red connotes blood and death but also the picture is in black and white therefore expressing more depressing themes. A shadow then comes across the page only reinforcing this depressing mood so far.

Another cut leads to a quick shot of a razor blade or shaver and the diagetic sound of a shaver stays with us even when it cuts to another black screen. It fades away when we next cut only to see another razor blade and the same sound being used again. This sound is quite creepy and would be perfect to use in a horror film. You see a close up of the fingers being used to hold the razor but the film doesnt reveal anymore than that to add suspense and mystery. Throughout this opening montage editing is used. This is beneficial to the script as it doesnt give too much information away but starts to put fear into the audience as the images of razor blades and dark, edgy rooms will help to create suspense and tension.

The camera cuts quickly a few times showing an extreme close up of someone writing in black ink on some paper but then cuts to a completely red screen showing what looks like an image of a face. After that you are shown another close up, this time of the man cutting different frames out of a film. You then see him move the frame across the table and then of him sticking it into a book. The camera cuts to the page being turned over, maybe showing it is a book full of photos, or victims.

Next you see another close up of him, this time putting a straight black line through parts of the book. This keeps occuring until you finally see someones face with him drawing a line through all of it, maybe showing he has been killed or dealt with. We assume this as the screen goes red straight after possibly representing his victims blood. More cuts this time showing half the screen as red and the other half with the man placing the frames into the book. You then see the man use a pin and this shows more themes of death and violence as the colour red filter is used to connote blood. A the end of the sequence, you are shown a mid shot of the photo album and more red filter. Seven is an unusual opening as the use of montage editing and the sound of a shaver creates fear for the audience.

There are two bankanble stars in this film. They are Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt and both would guarentee a successful return for the investors. The certificate for the film is an 18. This is because from the openig sequence you can see the connotations of death, violence and gore. I believe the naraative is linear as although it is hard to tell from a montage, it looks like everything is moving forward.

Examples of Horror - OS

I like the idea of having one murderer but his identity is kept secret until near the end of the film. I think this works well in films such as Sorority Row and Scream. This creates suspense and mystery in the film as know one knows who the killer is, not even the audience. In our two minute film opening, i would like to take the possible chase scene we may do and have the killer run after his/her victim, with us following the victim in a first person point of view. This would put us in the victims shoes and make us feel frightened because of the realism created through the use of a handicam.

Another idea i would possibly like to explore is something that makes the audience jump out of there seats. For example, the camera follows the protagonist past a mirror and when he firsts looks in the mirror, nothing is there but when he nexts looks the killer is there staring at him. This would make the viewer scared and frightened as they fear for the protagonists life.

Horror Genre - OS

Horror films are movies that strive to elict the emotions of fear, horror and terror from the viewers. Most plots often include themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. Some examples of horror films are Frankestein, Alien, 28 days later and Final Destination.

The point of the horror genre is to frighten the audience watching and that is what i enjoy about them, the fact you know something is going to happen but have no idea what until it happens, and you jump out of your seat scared!

Thriller genre - OS

A thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television that includes numerous and often overlapping sub genres. The characteristics of a thriller can include frequent and often fast paced action and resourceful heroes who must thwart more powerful villains. Thrillers often take place in exotic locatios such as foreign cities, deserts, polar regions or high seas.

There are many sub-genres of a thriller including a crime or conspiracy thriller, an action thriller, a medical or religious thriller and many others. An example of a thriller could be The Bourne trilogy or Phone Booth. In television, thrillers may include 24, Prison Break or Lost, which have all been very successful.

Initial Ideas - OS

This is our first post on the blog and myself and Nathan are looking into doing a horror film possibly including a chase scene and a scene to make the audience jump out of their seat! We are hoping to create a two minute film introduction to show off what we have learnt in media studies and also introduce are own ideas. We are hoping to possibly include a first person point of view in the chase scene and maybe even a dolly shot. At the moment we have not come up with a concrete idea just yet but we are still discussing a number of options to choose from. We have also looked at the possibility at a cross over film maybe including the thriller genre as we both like the idea of having a fast paced film yet is horrific in parts, possibly including dark shots and noir effects to create suspense and fear.

The woods is a possible location for a film but as many have tried this before, we may look elsewhere for our location. Where i work there is an old warehouse which isnt used often which could be a good location for our film as it is dark yet edgy which may work out in our favour. I am interested in using a lot of mise-en-scene such as ripped clothing and fake blood to create a horrific image for the audience. Furthermore, i would like to explore the option of using sound in a different way, for example rather than having creepy music to set up the chase scene have a slightly more silly music which could be interesting as it would put a different twist on the chase scene.
